A good way to learn new things to improve your well production, is to read books. In this article I will discuss some of my favorites petroleum engineering books. I will share with you the best Gas Lift books and the best ESP book that I know, along with some additional books to master petroleum fluids and oil and gas production optimization.
If you are looking for Gas Lift knowledge, this will be the number one book on my list.

To begin with this book will impress you just by its size! Almost 1000 pages! This is an impressive work achieved by Ali!

When I received it, I immediately saw how much work and commitment Ali had to put together to write this book.
I can also say that you will find in this book some stuffs about gas lift that you won’t find anywhere else.
As a gas lift instructor, I referred often to that book when I have doubts about something and I am looking for further details.
No matter if you are a beginner or very advanced in gas lift, you will learn something out of this book. It will allow any engineer to start from scratch on the topic of gas lift and bring him to an advanced level of knowledge. I highly recommend anyone working with gas lift to buy this book and refer to it regularly.

2. Practical Optimization of Petroleum Systems by Burney Waring

This book is in line with the rest of the work that I have seen from Burney: Excellent!
It is easy to read and I finished it in a couple of weeks. I would recommend it to any engineer that has already been exposed to production optimization within his company.
The book will help you to take a look back at the way production optimization is organized in your company. You will see the things that are done well, probably some that used to be done well, some that are done well in some subsidiaries and should be implemented in others, and some that are not done well at all… Overall you will get many ideas and practical guidelines to implement a strong production optimization system.
The book focuses on the management aspect and the related communication to deliver good production optimization and get your ideas approved. I especially like the section dealing with measurement uncertainties and error propagation. This key concept is very well illustrated; hence you will see how you can get to a high level of uncertainties while doing project evaluation.
Some of the concepts explained in the book are often misunderstood by decision makers of an organization. Hence, this is a must-read for managers in E&P companies and it will help senior staff involved in daily production.
A lot of good advice, presented methodically, to fight against production decline and reverse the trend. Congratulations to Burney for this high quality work!
3. Gas Lift Manual by Gabor Takacs

This is an excellent manual to learn the essential of gas lift and more. I referred to this book many times when I started to work with gas lift and it helped me to gain knowledge rapidly.
If you operate gas lift wells, then this is a must have.
4. The Properties of Petoleum fluids by Willima D. and McCain Jr.

This is a quite technical book, but it gives clear explanations about petroleum fluids which is a key topic when working with oil and gas production.
5. Electrical Submersible Pumps Manual – Design, Operations, and Maintenance by Gabor Takacs

This is another very good manual proposed by Gabor. It really describes many important concepts of the ESP. A good step to take if you are looking at increasing your knowledge of the ESP system.
